چکیده
British Journal of General Practice, October 2012 555 It has become increasingly common for UK patients to travel to malarial regions: in 2004 over 2.5 million visits were made by UK individuals to countries in which malaria is endemic, representing a 300% increase since 1987.1 Malaria prophylaxis routinely provided in general practice comprises atovaquone–proguanil, mefloquine, doxycycline, or chloroquine plus proguanil. This article describes two cases of malaria that presented 8 months after foreign travel, despite adherence to antimalarial prophylaxis.

Adherence to Chemoprophylaxis and Plasmodium falciparum Anti-Circumsporozoite Seroconversion in a Prospective Cohort Study of Dutch Short-Term Travelers
BACKGROUND We conducted a prospective study in a cohort of short-term travelers assessing the incidence rate of anti-circumsporozoite seroconversion, adherence to chemoprophylaxis, symptoms of malaria during travel, and malaria treatment abroad. METHODS Adults were recruited from the travel clinic of the Public Health Service Amsterdam. They kept a structured daily travel diary and donated bl...
متن کاملDelayed Onset of Symptoms and Atovaquone-Proguanil Chemoprophylaxis Breakthrough by Plasmodium malariae in the Absence of Mutation at Codon 268 of pmcytb
Plasmodium malariae is widely distributed across the tropics, causing symptomatic malaria in humans with a 72-hour fever periodicity, and may present after latency periods lasting up to many decades. Delayed occurrence of symptoms is observed in humans using chemoprophylaxis, or patients having received therapies targeting P. falciparum intraerythrocytic asexual stages, but few investigators ha...

Two Australian blood donors were diagnosed with relapsing Plasmodium vivax malaria 5 and 15 months, respectively, after their most recent travel to a malaria-endemic country. Common features included travel to Papua New Guinea (specifically, the Kokoda Trail); full compliance with recommended malaria chemoprophylaxis; and negative results on malaria antibody testing at the time of donation. Alt...
متن کاملChemoprophylaxis and the epidemiological characteristics of re-emergent P. vivax malaria in the Republic of Korea.
OBJECTIVE In the Republic of Korea (ROK), soldiers stationed where there is a risk of contracting malaria have received antimalarial chemoprophylaxis since 1997. However, chemoprophylaxis may facilitate the development of drug resistance, and late primary attacks in individuals who have received chemoprophylaxis are becoming more frequent. We investigated the association between chemoprophylaxi...
